Indicators for Research and Design Impact

Indicators are a way for you to measure impact, and to know if you have met your objectives. These sample indicators are based on the Video for Change Values and Methods.  

Documenting these indicators as they happen during your research and design process will make it easier for you to measure your impact.

 

1.Clear Rationale

Indicators for measuring that you have a clear rationale in the research and design stage are:

  • Respondents understand the social issue you are trying to tackle in your Video for Change Initiative.
  • Interviewees agree that something needs to be done regarding the issue you are tackling.
  • Community members are able to share stories that relate to and build on your initiative.
  • Team members are able to have content related discussions on the theory of change.

 

2. Power Analysis

Indicators for measuring the result of a power analysis in the research and design stage are:

  • Participants are willing and able to discuss imbalances of power in the community.
  • Your team members have a clear picture of the existing power structures within the community/field you will be working in.
  • Your team members are able to explain how cultural practices can sometimes reinforce existing power imbalances.
  • Interviewees are able to explain how government policy and politics relate to power structures within their community.

 

3. Participation and Inclusion

Indicators for measuring participation and inclusion in the research and design stage are:

  • A representative group from the impacted community, and/or communities of interest is included in the process.
  • Gender perspectives are included.
  • Community members have the opportunity to review and advise at the research and design stages.
  • Opportunities for full participation were given by hosting events at suitable times and locations that allow people to be present.
  • Promotion efforts to inform the relevant parts of the community about your initiative have been carried out.
  • Team members have input into resource allocations if appropriate.

 

4. Accountability and Transparency

Indicators for measuring impact related to accountability and transparency in the research and design stage are:

  • Community members are able to explain the goals of the Video for Change initiative and what effect it might have on their lives.
  • Maintained engagement with key stakeholders regarding the progress of your initiative. 
  • Where necessary and culturally appropriate, documented agreements are made and signed.
  • The intentions and goals of your project are clearly stated in a public document, depending on security issues.
  • Community members are able to evaluate your expectations for the Video for Change initiative.
  • The sources (documents and interviews) of your research and design are clearly stated and archived.

 

5. Mitigating Risk

Indicators for measuring impact related to mitigating risks in the research and design stage are:

  • Interviewees and respondents are informed about the potential risk of their participation in your initiative.
  • An overview of possible hazards and risks to the project has been made.
  • Discussions on how to minimise hazards/risks have been held with the team.
  • Sensitive data has been stored safely.
  • Facilities have been created for people to participate anonymously.
  • A risk analysis document has been written and made available to the team.
  • Steps on what to do in the event of an emergency have been agreed upon.

 

Evaluations on the go!

At any stage during your process it’s useful to take a moment and reflect on what has happened. Doing a quick evaluation is always good and doesn’t have to be boring. We recommend you do short evaluations after specific activities or simply after a day working together. You can start by asking everyone if they felt they achieved what they wanted that day. This can trigger a discussion from which everyone can learn.  These short evaluations are important because:

  • they allow participants to express their thoughts and feelings about content 
  • they are a means of gathering ‘live’ feedback
  • they provide you with insights into how to improve your activity next time
  • they create a positive and open environment.
